These newly acquired fighter-trainer jets FA-50 “Fighting Eagle” were part of the 12 units of its kind purchased for P18.9 billion by the military from South Korean firm Korea Aerospace Industries, or KAI.
According to reports, the jets maneuvered by Air Defense Wing pilots took off from Clark Field Airbase and made contact with the presidential flight at 6:37 AM. Incidentally, this was the first time since 2005 that the Air Force performed its traditional role of escorting the president while in Philippine airspace.
Upon his arrival, the president stated that this trip could be his last trip abroad as head of state because his term will expire in June following the May election.
