Dolphin giving birth caught on cam

Dolphins are a widely distributed and diverse group of fully aquatic marine mammals, meaning it is a kind of animal which gives birth to live young. In fact, the word 'dolphin' originally came from the Greek word delphis, "dolphin", which was related to the Greek word delphus meaning "womb". Hence, the animal's name can therefore be interpreted as meaning "a 'fish' with a womb".

Amazing footage of Dolphin giving birth to an adorable calf

In the video, you can witness exactly just that: a dolphin giving birth. You can spot a small 'fluke' or the young dolphin's tail as it slowly emerged from the slip under the mother dolphin. It probably took several hours of the mother dolphin circling around the water, pumping and swaying around until the right moment for the child dolphin to come out happened.

Unlike humans where it is usually the head that comes out first, the mother dolphin releases the tail first in order to avoid the child dolphin, called a calf, from drowning. Once the calf is out of the uterus the female quickly snaps off the umbilical cord and typically helps the calf to the surface for its first breath of air.
