More often than not, this form of pollution happens on marine areas, but spills may also occur on land.
Oil spills can have disastrous consequences for society; economically, environmentally, and socially. But until we no longer have to rely on oil, we still have to pump oil and ship it all over the world, hence, there will be more inevitable oil spills in the future.
As a result, Fermilab, America's premier particle physics laboratory, has "come up with an environmentally-friendly way to sop up oil spills without the use of chemicals, and with the ability to reuse the collected oil", according to an article written by Katie Medlock for the website called Inhabitat.
Arden Warner, one of Fermilab's physicist, thought of cleaning up oil spills through the use of magnets. The video below demonstrates how magnetite, a naturally occurring metal, is mixed in with the oil and then magnetically vacuumed up.
